Have an allergy test done

To rule out a food allergy, it’s best to have your dog examined by a veterinarian first. Have an allergy test done; this not only determines whether there is an allergy or intolerance but also reveals which (animal) proteins your dog is allergic to. Once the results are in, you can specifically look for suitable hypoallergenic food and treats. Everything to relieve your sensitive troublemaker from his or her allergic symptoms!

Hypoallergenic; what does that mean?

Did you know that the word ‘hypoallergenic’ is a combination of the two terms ‘hypo’ and ‘allergenic’? The term ‘hypo’ comes from the Greek language; it can be translated as ‘less than normal.’ An allergen, on the other hand, is known as a substance that can cause an allergic reaction in both humans and animals. By combining these two words, the term ‘hypoallergenic’ was created. We can explain the meaning of ‘hypoallergenic’ as: ‘less chance of an allergic reaction.’

What do we mean by hypoallergenic dog treats?

With hypoallergenic treats, we distinguish three different compositions, which we list below. Treats made with hydrolyzed proteins Hydrolyzed, another tricky term. But the meaning is actually very simple; hydrolyzed means that the (animal) protein sources are cut into small pieces. So if you see ‘hydrolyzed proteins’ listed on the label, the proteins in the dog treats are cut into small pieces. Why is this done? This way, the body does not recognize the cut pieces as the protein your dog is allergic to. This significantly reduces the chance of an allergic reaction. Dog treats based on unique protein sources Many sensitive and/or allergic dogs react to the most common meat types in dog food and/or treats: chicken, beef, and pork. For this reason, these animal protein sources are never used in hypoallergenic dog treats. To reduce the risk of unpleasant symptoms, hypoallergenic dog treats are made with ingredients that are less likely to cause an allergic reaction. Dog treats based on a single animal protein source Finally, there are also hypoallergenic dog treats that use only one animal protein source. By eliminating other meat types, the chance of an allergic reaction is even smaller. Use these dog treats during an elimination diet; this way, you can find out more quickly which animal protein sources your dog is allergic to.

A food allergy; what is your dog suffering from?

As much as we want to, a food allergy or intolerance in your dog is not always preventable. Fortunately, there are ways—such as using hypoallergenic food and/or treats—to reduce the chance of an allergic reaction. If you suspect a food allergy or intolerance and the symptoms match those below, have an allergy test done by the veterinarian. The sooner this happens, the sooner you can take action. Skin and coat problems When an allergic reaction occurs, your four-legged friend’s immune system tries to fight the substance causing the allergy. As a result, inflammatory products form in the skin (such as histamine), leading to intense itching in the armpits, groin, and paws. Unfortunately, this often results in skin infections, rashes, or hair loss. Stomach and intestinal problems Does your furry friend vomit a lot or frequently have loose stools? Then there’s a good chance your dog has a food allergy or intolerance. Additionally, (excessive) flatulence can also indicate an allergy or intolerance. Ear infections that recur regularly Do you notice your dog frequently scratching its ears or shaking its head? Take immediate action, as there may be an ear infection. Don’t be surprised if your dog whines when you touch its ears; an ear infection can be very painful! Also, watch for red spots or unpleasant odors around the ears. These can also indicate an ear infection. If the ear infection recurs regularly, it may be due to a food allergy or intolerance.
