The Best Food for Kittens

With the arrival of a small, fluffy family member, a lot comes your way. After visiting all the pet stores, you ask yourself: ‘Do I have everything at home?’ Comfortable bed, check. Large scratching post, check. Various toys, check. But wait a minute; did you forget something? Indeed, without healthy kitten food, your little ball of energy is already 1-0 behind. Fortunately, you don’t have to — though you may — make a detour to the supermarket. The best food for kittens is also available in the Prima Diervoeding webshop.

Reasons to Choose Kitten Food

Because your kitten grows significantly in the first year, he/she has different nutritional needs than an adult cat. So don’t give your little rascal adult cat food, but choose healthy kitten food. The kitten kibbles from Prima Diervoeding are tailored to the nutritional needs of your little ball of energy.

Which Ingredients Are Essential for Your Little Ball of Energy?

To meet your kitten’s energy needs, a high meat or fish content is required. Of course, adult cat food also contains a lot of animal proteins, but this amount is not sufficient for a kitten. As mentioned above, our little house tigers are still growing, so they require even more meat (or fish) compared to adult cats. However, your kitten doesn’t only need more animal proteins; a higher amount of vitamins and minerals is just as crucial. Calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, and zinc — among others — ensure good muscle development, strong bones, and stable vital functions.

Taurine Is a Must

Another essential nutrient that must not be missing in the best food for kittens is taurine. This nutrient contributes to the growth of the nervous system, vision, and better heart function. The fact is that cats do not produce taurine themselves; so make sure with the help of healthy kitten food — which contains taurine — that your kitten does not develop a taurine deficiency. A deficiency can lead to health problems such as heart muscle diseases, a weak immune system, and blindness.

Choose Natural Preservatives

For longer shelf life, artificial preservatives such as BHA and BHT are often used. And that is not without consequences; these substances can cause high blood pressure and skin problems. That’s why artificial preservatives have no chance at Prima Diervoeding! In our best food for kittens, you will find only vitamin C and vitamin E. In other words, a natural alternative to BHA and BHT.

Do Not Give This to Kittens

Don’t be tempted by that cute kitty face and do not give your kitten food scraps. No matter how much your little ball of energy enjoys it, health problems are always lurking. Herbs, raw fish and/or meat, and bones/shanks are a real no-go. For example, your kitten cannot digest herbs, and raw meat and/or fish can contain salmonella. Moreover, there is a risk that pieces of cooked bone/shank can get stuck in your fluff ball’s throat; so don’t do it! Fortunately, you can find the tastiest and best food for kittens at Prima Diervoeding. Check out our range in the supermarket or explore our webshop.

How Much of the Best Food for Kittens Should You Give?

Don’t just give your kitten some kibbles randomly, but follow the feeding table on the packaging. Note: do not give the kibbles all at once, but divide the amount into small portions to give at fixed times. This prevents overweight and provides structure. Also, always provide your kitten with enough drinking water.

How to Transition a Kitten to Solid Food

Generally, kittens switch to solid food between 4 and 8 weeks; in most cases, this happens at the breeder. If you have a litter of kittens for the first time, make sure this is done properly. Let the little ones get used to solid kitten food while they are still nursing from the mother cat. Only fully switch the kittens to solid food once they are completely accustomed to the kibbles or when they are no longer allowed to nurse from the mother cat. By the time kittens leave the nest, they should be fully on solid kitten food.

Soften the Texture a Bit

Because kibbles are much harder than your kitten is used to, your little fluff ball may need some time to get used to it. To soften the dry food somewhat, you can soak the kibbles briefly in lukewarm water.

When Can Your Kitten Switch to Adult Food?

In principle, you may only give kittens adult cat food after 12 months. For large cats, such as a Maine Coon or Norwegian Forest Cat, only after 15 months.
