How Much Does a Puppy Eat?

It’s common for your puppy to beg for more kibble or treats than intended; every dog owner experiences this at some point. However, the right amount is more important than you might think; make sure you know the answer to the question ‘how much does a puppy eat’?

Pay Attention to the Right Amount

Giving too little or too much kibble can cause health problems. Too little food can lead to weak bones, a dull coat, low energy, and limited growth. On the other hand, too much food can cause issues like growing pains and skeletal abnormalities. To find out how much a puppy should eat, check the feeding chart on every package, which is based on your puppy’s adult weight and age. Below, we distinguish between weight classes:
  • Small breeds -> adult weight between 1 and 10 kilos
  • Medium breeds -> adult weight between 10 and 25 kilos
  • Large breeds -> adult weight between 25 and 45 kilos
  • Giant breeds -> adult weight over 45 kilos

Structure, Structure, Structure

By giving your puppy four meals a day during the first 24 weeks, you ensure gradual growth. After these 24 weeks, divide the required amount over two to three meals per day. Tip: always give meals at a fixed time; this creates more regularity.

Ensure Calmness

As cozy as it may be, try to keep your puppy away from other animals and playing children during mealtime. If you don’t, your energetic pup may develop food aggression. Also, your puppy might start eating too quickly out of fear that another dog or cat will take their kibble. Furthermore, we advise against taking your little friend out for a walk during the first hour—ideally even the first two hours—after eating. Playing is also off-limits during the first hour. This helps prevent gastric torsion; so keep this in mind.
