How much can a puppy eat?
‘
How much can a puppy eat?’ The answer to this question varies per puppy; after all, no two bundles of energy are the same. But don’t worry, in this article we will go into detail.
Make sure your puppy gets the right amount
Are you giving too few or too many kibble pieces? This can lead to health problems. For example, too little food can cause a dull coat, limited growth, low energy, and weak bones. Also, be careful not to give your puppy
too many puppy kibbles; this can cause growing pains or — even worse — skeletal abnormalities.
What is the weight class of your little friend?
To prevent your puppy from eating too little or too much puppy food, it is important to follow the feeding chart on the packaging. Each feeding chart is based on the adult weight and age of your puppy.
Below we list the weight classes:
- Small breeds -> adult weight between 1 and 10 kilos
- Medium breeds -> adult weight between 10 and 25 kilos
- Large breeds -> adult weight between 25 and 45 kilos
- Giant breeds -> adult weight over 45 kilos
The right amount for a small breed puppy
The older your little friend gets, the bigger he/she becomes. To support this growth phase, your puppy will need more and more kibble.
Still, that doesn’t answer the question ‘how much can a puppy eat?’. Fortunately, every dog food brand includes a feeding chart on the packaging. That saves you a lot of complicated calculations.

Structure is necessary
As important as it is to know how much a puppy can eat; structure and regularity must
not be missing. Therefore, give your puppy four meals a day for the first 24 weeks. After 24 weeks, reduce this to two to three meals per day.
For even more regularity, we recommend giving the puppy food at a fixed time.
Pay attention to the environment
Let your puppy enjoy his/her meal in peace. Make sure the area is free from other animals and/or playing children. If you
do not do this, food aggression can occur. Also, your puppy is likely to gulp down the food. In that case, your bundle of energy will be afraid that another dog and/or cat will eat the kibbles.
After mealtime, also ensure enough rest; wait at least one hour before walking and/or playing.
