At Prima Diervoeding, you’ll find not only the best products for your pup but also everything you need to keep your adult dog enjoying a healthy diet.

Puppy food instead of adult dog food

Dog food for a puppy was created for good reason. Your pup is still growing, which means your little friend needs more essential nutrients. That’s why puppy food contains a higher amount of crucial nutrients than food for adult dogs.

These are the best ingredients for healthy puppy kibbles

With a healthy composition, your pup will enjoy a responsible and tasty meal. To achieve this, plenty of animal proteins, important fats, and carbohydrates must be included. The energy level of your pup benefits from lots of meat and fats. Moreover, a high meat content has other important functions; it contributes to strong muscles, healthy organs, and a stable immune system. Besides being an energy booster, fats—thanks to omega-3 fatty acids—also play an important role in the coat and skin. In other words, your pup’s fur will shine beautifully! But let’s not forget carbohydrates; they contribute to the gut flora of your little ball of energy.

Why vitamins and minerals are so important

No matter how healthy animal proteins, fats, and carbohydrates are, adding phosphorus, calcium, vitamin A, and D makes the puppy kibbles even healthier! Phosphorus and calcium are essential minerals for strong bones. Additionally, calcium also plays an important role in your pup’s teeth and muscles. Of course, we don’t skip the vitamins; vitamin A supports the skin and eyes, while vitamin D promotes your pup’s muscle function.

Don’t buy puppy food with artificial preservatives

Unfortunately, dog food for puppies still too often contains artificial preservatives—such as BHA and BHT—to extend shelf life. However, these can cause unpleasant issues, including higher blood pressure and skin problems. At Prima Diervoeding, we naturally use vitamin E. In other words, a natural alternative that does not cause unpleasant side effects.

Give the right amount

No matter how much your little friend loves the kibbles, never give your puppy too much dog food. This can cause growing pains and, in the worst case, skeletal abnormalities. Be careful with too little food as well; this can lead to weak bones, limited growth, and lethargy. The feeding chart on the packaging calculates the required amount based on your pup’s weight. This way, you’ll quickly know how many kibbles to give.

How many portions?

Feed your pup four meals a day during the first 24 weeks; divide the required amount of dog food for your puppy into four portions and give them at fixed times. After these 24 weeks, reduce the number of meals to two to three per day.

Switch to adult dog food on time

When your little ball of energy has outgrown the puppy phase, it’s time to switch to adult dog food. To do this properly, here are the guidelines per weight class:
  • Small breed (1-10 kilos) – 10 to 12 months
  • Medium breed (11-24 kilos) – around 12 months
  • Large breed (25-44 kilos) – 15 to 18 months
  • Very large breed (more than 45 kilos) – 18 to 24 months
If in doubt, contact your veterinarian.
