To Do or Not to Do; Wet Cat Food for Your House Tiger

With a picky house tiger at home, mealtime doesn’t always go smoothly. It’s time to add variety to your cat’s diet. And what better way to do that than with wet cat food? To give your fluffy friend plenty of choices, Prima Diervoeding’s range offers various flavors of wet food: beef, chicken, lamb, fish, tuna, turkey, and salmon.

Essential Ingredients for Healthy Wet Food

Start your search for wet food with a high meat content; our house tigers are naturally carnivores. Therefore, the composition must contain (a lot of!) animal proteins as the first and most important ingredient. After all, meat provides your cat with the necessary energy. Moreover, a high meat content supplies your fluffy friend with essential amino acids that he/she cannot produce on their own. Also, make sure the wet food for your cat contains enough fats, minerals, and vitamins. Think of vitamin A, vitamin E, phosphorus, and calcium, which — among other things — contribute to a healthy immune system. All in all, these nutrients are indispensable for your house tiger’s health.

Optimal Moisture Content

Cats are generally not good drinkers. No matter how often you refresh the water bowl, your fluffy friend refuses to drink even a single drop. Extremely frustrating, because a lack of moisture can lead to bladder stones in the long term. But what exactly does this mean? In short, bladder stones are small crystals — also called struvite or oxalate — that form in the cat’s urine. Fortunately, there is special diet food to address this problem. Contact your veterinarian for this. Still, we believe prevention is better than cure. Supplement your cat’s dry food with Prima Diervoeding’s wet food. Thanks to its high moisture content of over 80%, your loyal companion will get plenty of fluids.

The Texture of Wet Cat Food

Cats more often than not turn their noses up at what we consider a tasty cat meal. This is mainly due to the texture. That’s why it’s important to vary textures; let wet food in gravy, jelly, and mousse regularly make an appearance. However, texture not only stimulates your cat’s senses; a strong aroma also encourages your house tiger to eat.

Complete or Supplementary?

Always read the packaging of wet food carefully; wet food is not automatically a complete meal. Without essential ingredients, it can also be supplementary food. Supplementary wet food is mainly intended as a treat, while complete wet food contains all the necessary nutrients for a main meal.

Adjust the Amount of Wet Food

Because of its high moisture content, wet food contains fewer nutrients than the same amount of dry food. To ensure your fluffy friend gets just as many nutrients, you need to give more wet cat food.

Storing Wet Cat Food

Unopened pouches of wet food do not need to be — though you may — stored in the refrigerator. As long as you keep them in a dry place, it won’t harm them. Have you just fed your cat? Then store the opened pouch in the refrigerator, preferably covered. To prevent spoilage, wet cat food should not be kept in the fridge for more than 3 days. Is it too much for your cat to eat within 3 days? Freeze the portions for later use.
