Why Your Puppy Should Never Eat Adult Dog Food
Let’s get straight to the point: never give your puppy adult dog food! The reason is simple; this type of food contains too low an amount of essential nutrients that support your puppy’s growth.
Instead, give your little bundle of energy (healthy) puppy food that contains a higher amount of crucial nutrients.
Healthy Ingredients; Not a Luxury
No matter how tasty the puppy food is, without healthy ingredients you’re nowhere. After all, your puppy’s health comes first.

The Necessity of Vitamins and Minerals
For a complete composition, these important minerals and vitamins must not be missing: phosphorus, calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin D.
Calcium and phosphorus ensure — among other things — a healthy bone metabolism. But that’s not the only function of calcium; this mineral also contributes to strong muscles and healthy teeth.
To support your puppy’s immune system, vitamins A and D are essential nutrients. Another function of vitamin A is promoting the eyes and skin of your furry friend. Vitamin D helps with muscle function.

Artificial Preservatives Are Not Welcome

The shelf life of our puppy food is therefore only extended with a natural alternative: vitamin E. Additionally, vitamin C is used extensively.
The Importance of the Right Amount
As tempting as it is to make your puppy happy with lots of puppy food, overfeeding is never a good idea. As a result, your little bundle of energy can suffer from growing pains. In some cases, too large an amount can even lead to skeletal abnormalities.
But too little puppy food can also cause health problems. This can result in a dull coat, limited growth, lethargy, and weak bones.
In short, the right amount of puppy food is very important. But how do you find out how much food your puppy needs? Simple, use the feeding chart on the packaging. Based on your puppy’s weight, this chart calculates the required amount of puppy food. It’s that easy!
How Many Meals Per Day?
Make sure to divide the required amount into four meals per day during the first 24 weeks. Do this at fixed times; this adds more structure. After 24 weeks, reduce the same amount to two to three portions per day.
When to Switch to Adult Dog Food?
Eventually, your furry friend will outgrow the puppy phase. That is the moment to switch your puppy to adult dog food. Based on weight, here are the guidelines:
- Small breed (1-10 kilos) – 10 to 12 months
- Medium breed (11-24 kilos) – on average 12 months
- Large breed (25-44 kilos) – 15 to 18 months
- Very large breed (more than 45 kilos) – 18 to 24 months
